The goal of my research is to shed light upon the unseen effects of NAFTA, the effects that the media fails to mention and politicians are reluctant to discuss. This is an important topic due to the sheer amount of individuals’ lives that NAFTA affected, many for the worse. In existing scholarship concerning NAFTA, I believe that these negative effects are often overlooked. Many choose instead to focus on the positives NAFTA yielded for the Mexican and American economies. However, in my research, I attempt to bridge this gap by exposing the hardships that NAFTA produced. The primary sources I have selected will benefit me in my analysis of NAFTA. These sources have been meticulously selected through an evaluation process of the degree of value each source possesses- each reveals negative consequences of NAFTA. This topic is especially significant to the modern day political climate. Under President Donald Trump, immigration has become one of the U.S.’s most pressing concerns. This is where NAFTA fits into the picture: one of the deal’s most devastating consequences was job loss, which in turn led to Mexican migration northward.
